Know if you’re ready to downsize to a smaller home with these 5 signs.
Downsizing is a word that evokes different reactions. Some people are excited about the prospect, while others dread it or put it off, sometimes for too long. But how do you know if the time is right? Use the checklist below to guide your decision.
1. Overwhelming maintenance. If you feel that the financial or time commitment of maintaining your home has become too much, or if the upkeep now feels tedious, Downsizing to a more manageable property could be a relief.
2. Unmet needs. Ask yourself if your home still meets your current needs. Maybe you don’t like using the stairs anymore, or you’re struggling with it. Empty rooms and amenities you no longer use, like the basement, pools, or a large yard, are all signs that our needs may have changed.
3. Desire to convert home equity into income. For most people, one’s home is considered one of their most valuable assets. Downsizing allows you to convert your home equity into income, giving you the opportunity to enjoy those savings.
4. Changes in career or family ties. If your career or family no longer ties you to your current location, it might be time to move. Moving closer to family, especially grandchildren, can be a meaningful reason to downsize.
5. Lifestyle change. Maybe you are thinking of having a simpler life, a warmer climate, or a change in scenery. Even staying in the same town but relocating to a smaller house in a different neighborhood can provide a refreshing change.
Downsizing doesn’t always mean a drastic change. The key here is to think about what would make you happy and whether downsizing could help you achieve that.
